help for a noob with a virgin rooter

i had my phone and virgin tv package cut of last year and i was talking to a old friend he said i can flash your rooter and you can get your net for nothing ive heard this of 2 people that it can be done so iam wanting to do it myself iam not much of a hacker but can flash xboxes if someone could explain to me exactly what the hack does and how to go about it in noob speek as we were all noobs once any help would be appriecated thank you
