If someone is trying to offer help via teamviewer is that something that should ring an alarm? Being that there are reports of hacking issues with this program.

they'll have full access to your system but you can watch them do what they are doing (but it takes less than a second to run a script that will dump your passwords/keys), personally i'd still put them in a VM and let them do what they need to do from there (this still gives them full access to the modem/router as i assume this is what they are doing)

VM is your best option no doubt about, get a virtual box for free.
