Noob!! help needed with VM modem please

hi all,
i have recieved a modem from my father, who also has a few more given to other family members all working great, so i decided to have one, he explained the process to get up and running, so off i went, i got some macs, saved them to the box then connected back up to coax feed, all seemed good as it went through the stages to operational. then after about 40 seconds *BAM* unidentified network, lost connection to modem, also noticed that only the power and ethernet lights are on, when feed is plugged in send and recieve lights work but i dont see a sync or ready light? never managed to get an internet connection.
any help would be great

So my box is not bricked then, I have heard google crome and fire fox could be the cause to, I have tried a number of macs and get same result should I be searchin for a certain type of mac

on virgin ambit120 macs are still d1.0 and therefore do not need certs but they are rare

have now tried so many macs ive lost count, all have done the same, am i doing something wrong? all i was told to do was put in a mac, but still getting unidentified network after 40 seconds when i connect the coax!! also have only had vm services in this property installed about 12 months ago, are there new settings needed or have vm updated the docsis at this period to prevent this working?

docsis has been updated used to be d1/d2 now it's d1/d2/d3 with the d1 being removed as and when they can
with d2/d3 you need certs to get online (even then it's not easy)

ok where can i get the certs from and how do i know when to use? what are the latest settings for rev39?

settings are whatever work for you (shitty comment i know but it's true as everywhere is different, down to the node)
and easyest way to get certs to to extract them from a subscribed modem via jtag
