I remember reading a pdf on the history of cable modem flashing, and remember reading that they were able to upload firmware to a sb5100 via an ethernet port. Is there any merit to this? Just curious on the different ways to modify the modems. I tried searching the forums to no avail.

Yes it can be done...Just alot easier to flash via a JTAG than this..
So, stick with standard flashing

here's the main drawback to etherflash.. Brick O' Matic!
if it loses a byte or two during the flash you end up with a brick. Your only recourse is to reflash with a jtag of some sort so why chance it? I had 2 modems brick from Comcast firmware upgrades back in 2007...they replaced them but it was still a pita. 99% of the time it will work flawlessly but when it doesn't...

Alright, thank you. I don't have access to my serial ports at the moment, but I don't need another paperweight. :/
